<p id="id917910-0-p"><span class="dateline">Toronto — </span> Protect-A-Bed&#8217;s annual conference exuded an international vibe when company officials and sales representatives from around the world gathered here for two days of meetings.</p>
<p id="id917916-2-p">&#8220;Simply the Best&#8221; was the theme for the conference, held at the Hyatt Regency downtown in the shadow of the city&#8217;s famous CN tower, which, at 1,815 feet, is the tallest freestanding tower in the world.</p>
<p id="id918010-4-p">Protect-A-Bed officials, including founder David Kaplan of Australia, said the company, a provider of mattress and pillow protection products, stands tall on the mattress landscape. Kaplan said his vision for the company as a worldwide force in the industry &#8220;is becoming a reality,&#8221; and noted that his mattress journey started 26 years ago.</p>
<p id="id918017-6-p">Yet it was only nine years ago that principals and fellow South Africans Clive Goldin and Lawrence Hirson launched the company in the United States, later bringing in Bernard Weinstein, another former South African, to launch the business in Canada.</p>
<p id="id918023-8-p">The final piece of the management structure fell into place five years ago when James Bell, another South African, joined the U.S. arm of the business.</p>
<p id="id917953-10-p">The conference drew about 100 people. Weinstein, president of Caber Distributors, saluted Kaplan&#8217;s &#8220;belief and passion&#8221; in the product, as well as his &#8220;obsession with detail and quality.&#8221; And he offered this challenge to the group: &#8220;A team of passionate, committed people has been assembled. We must turn the best product into the best brand. We can&#8217;t sit on our laurels. We must re-energize ourselves. The world waits for no one.&#8221;</p>
<p id="id917961-12-p">The reinvention and reinvigoration themes played out in a variety of sessions. The conference got off to an inspirational start at a performance of the Famous PEOPLE Players, a Toronto black light theatre company that gives developmentally challenged individuals a chance to shine. The founder of that group, Diane Dupuy, addressed the meeting the next day, telling the attendees to listen to their inner voice. &#8220;Everything begins with that voice in your heart,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p id="id917969-14-p">Steve Stagner, president of Houston-based Mattress Firm, a Protect-A-Bed customer, challenged the group to take its game to the next level. Choose growth over fear, Stagner said, recalling the story of how polar explorer Ernest Shackleton successfully led his men with determination and optimism.</p>
<p id="id918079-16-p">Cecil Brauer, former owner of the Therapedic and Serta brands in Canada and now CEO of Brimor Capital, urged the attendees to strive to be the best in the market. &#8220;If you are the best,&#8221; he said, &#8220;everything falls into place.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sales trainer Ed Henry gave a pep talk on the power of salesmanship, telling his audience that success starts with a positive mental attitude nurtured at the start of every day.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class=""><p>The Big Closer will be filmed in Canada but where will The Big Closer come from.  The 100% unscripted reality television show is taking a twist and auditions have not taken place.  Thirteen episodes of selling challenges to find the next Big Closer.  We have seen so such interest from both sides of the border that we decided to make this contest more entertaining and exciting.</p>
<p>Ten contestants from the United States will compete against 10 Contestants from Canada.  Each episode one or two contestants will be eliminated from the competition. The unscripted drama plays into the show as each contestant will face the decision of representing their team and their country while competing for the single prize and title of the next Big Closer.</p>
<p>This is the first time that any television production has promoted their show as 100% unscripted.  We felt that a story board was not required for this production, that the natural personality of the sales person and the guidelines of the selling challenges will set the environment for entertaining television.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class=""><p>Since the new year started we have been overwhelmed.  The Power of 24 Hours Workbook Series offer has been successful and the upcoming auditions for the Reality TV show is approaching soon.  We have also seen a dramatic increase in the audition applications coming in from the United States.</p>
<p>We will be announcing auditions dates for New York, Chicago, Detroit and Los Angeles within the next  week.  This show will be broadcasted accross Canada and viewed on the soon to be release Big Closer TV.</p>
<p>The full production schedule for The Big Closer will be posted on our site January 22, 2009.  This will include complete audition dates and locations along with production schedule and sales challenges.  The television show will air in September of 2009.</p>
<p>The Big Closer has also released it&#8217;s <a title="Careers in Sales" href="http://thebigcloser.com/sales-careers" >Careers in Sales</a> Page.  You will find up to date feeds from sales positions across the country.  We will be posting feeds from the United States as well.  It appears that we are receiving great support beyond the border and we excited to expand our market.  North America is showing strong support for the sales profession.</p>
<p>The Recession Proof Selling Tour dates and locations will be released on January 27, 2009.  Some of the best speakers in our profession will be sharing their secrets on what is required to become the 100% Sales Professional.  This is an exciting time for us in 2009 and I promise that it will only get better.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">I am a sales professional. It is something that I am proud of. I have to admit that there are many connotations and stereotypes created by society on the perception of the sales profession. In many training sessions, I ask sales people to describe their personal vision of how they see other sales people. The remarks and comments are amazing. I have heard statements referring to the dislike of the aggressive pushy behaviour, the dishonesty, the egotistical approach and laziness of sales people that are working in our profession. It is amazing that we are able to view so many people from our profession with such disgust and yet become frustrated with the prospect that may not treat us accordingly when we are professional with honest intent.</p>

Prospecting is often referred to as the &#8221; Lifeblood of Selling&#8221;. This is the area that most sales people do not like to spend their time. Prospecting is the skill of closers. Prospecting is the most important skill that we can develop to becoming successful. There is a reluctance to Prospecting as it is hard work. It is not difficult to peak the curiosity of a prospect but it is hard work calling many prospects to creating those opportunities.</p>
<p>If you do not like prospecting, than you need to be in Sales where you can rely on inbound prospects calling on you. This would mean that you are meant for Retail rather than direct sales such as business to business.</p>
<p>You can teach a fisherman to hunt but it doen not make him a hunter.</p>
